🍲 How to Cook Buddha Ratana Himalayan White Small Kidney Beans

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Buddha Ratana Himalayan White Small Kidney Beans

  • 3–4 cups water for cooking

  • Salt, to taste

  • ¼ tsp turmeric, optional

Method:

  1. Sort & Wash the Beans
Check the beans and remove any stones or unwanted particles. Rinse thoroughly 2–3 times with clean water.

  2. Soak Thoroughly
Soak the beans in plenty of water for 8–12 hours or overnight. Make sure there is enough water because the beans will expand considerably.

  3. Drain & Rinse
Drain the soaking water and rinse the beans once again with fresh water.

  4. Pressure Cook
Add the soaked beans to a pressure cooker with 3–4 cups fresh water. Add turmeric if desired.

  5. Cook Until Tender
Pressure cook on medium heat for approximately 5–7 whistles, then allow the pressure to release naturally. Cooking time can vary depending on the age and firmness of the beans and the pressure cooker used.

  6. Check for Doneness
The beans should be completely tender and easily mashable when pressed between your fingers. If they are still firm, add a little hot water and pressure cook for another 1–2 whistles.

  7. Season & Prepare
Once tender, use the cooked beans in your preferred curry, soup, stew, salad, or rice preparation.

  8. Serve Hot
Pair with steamed rice, roti, chapati, or your favourite grain.

💡 Cooking Tip

Do not skip the soaking and thorough cooking steps. Proper soaking helps the beans hydrate evenly, while complete cooking is important for kidney beans.

For a rich curry, cook the beans until tender first, then simmer them with your masala so they can absorb the flavours beautifully.

Kalanamak is a heritage, short-grain variety grown specifically in the Himalayan Terai. Unlike Basmati, it has a distinct dark tip, a nuttier flavour, and a softer texture. It is naturally aged and minimally processed to preserve its unique nutritional profile.
Yes, Kalanamak is known for having a lower Glycemic Index (GI) compared to many standard white rice varieties. This means it digests slower, helping to prevent sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag ensures that the rice is authentically sourced from its native region (Siddharthnagar and surrounding districts in UP). It guarantees you are getting the genuine heritage grain, not a hybrid grown elsewhere.
Rinse the rice thoroughly and soak it for 20-30 minutes before cooking. Use a water-to-rice ratio of about 2:1. Cook on a low simmer until the water is absorbed, then let it rest covered for 5 minutes for the perfect fluffy texture.
Store the rice in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place. Kept away from moisture and direct sunlight, our Kalanamak rice easily maintains its aroma and quality for up to 12 months.
