Known as Bajra across India, Pearl Millet is one of the country's most cherished traditional grains. It has been enjoyed for generations, particularly in regional Indian kitchens, where its naturally rich, earthy flavour makes it a favourite for hearty and satisfying meals.

🍲 How to Cook Buddha Ratana Pearl Millet

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Buddha Ratana Pearl Millet

  • 2½–3 cups water

  • Salt, to taste

  • 1 tsp ghee or oil, optional

Method:

  1. Rinse Thoroughly
Wash the Pearl Millet 2–3 times with clean water to remove surface dust and impurities.

  2. Soak Before Cooking
Soak for approximately 4–6 hours or overnight for more even cooking and a softer texture. Drain well before cooking.

  3. Cook the Millet
Add 1 cup soaked Pearl Millet and approximately 2½–3 cups fresh water to a saucepan. Add salt and ghee or oil if desired.

  4. Bring to a Boil
Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.

  5. Simmer & Cover
Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for approximately 20–30 minutes, or until the grains are tender and the water has been absorbed.

  6. Rest
Turn off the heat and leave covered for approximately 5–10 minutes.

  7. Fluff & Serve
Gently fluff with a fork and serve warm.

💡 Cooking Tip

Because Pearl Millet has a naturally firm grain structure, soaking is recommended for a softer, more evenly cooked result.

For a creamy Bajra khichdi or porridge, use additional water and cook longer until the grains soften to your preferred consistency.

For a richer traditional flavour, lightly dry-roast the millet before cooking.

Kalanamak is a heritage, short-grain variety grown specifically in the Himalayan Terai. Unlike Basmati, it has a distinct dark tip, a nuttier flavour, and a softer texture. It is naturally aged and minimally processed to preserve its unique nutritional profile.
Yes, Kalanamak is known for having a lower Glycemic Index (GI) compared to many standard white rice varieties. This means it digests slower, helping to prevent sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag ensures that the rice is authentically sourced from its native region (Siddharthnagar and surrounding districts in UP). It guarantees you are getting the genuine heritage grain, not a hybrid grown elsewhere.
Rinse the rice thoroughly and soak it for 20-30 minutes before cooking. Use a water-to-rice ratio of about 2:1. Cook on a low simmer until the water is absorbed, then let it rest covered for 5 minutes for the perfect fluffy texture.
Store the rice in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place. Kept away from moisture and direct sunlight, our Kalanamak rice easily maintains its aroma and quality for up to 12 months.
