🍚 How to Cook Buddha Ratana Kashmiri Rice

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Buddha Ratana Kashmiri Rice

  • 1½–2 cups water

  • Salt, to taste

  • 1 tsp ghee, optional

Method:

  1. Rinse the Rice
Wash the rice gently 2–3 times with clean water until the water becomes relatively clear.

  2. Soak for Better Texture
Soak the rice for approximately 20–30 minutes. Drain thoroughly before cooking.

  3. Bring Water to a Boil
Add approximately 1½–2 cups of water to a saucepan. Add salt and ghee if desired.

  4. Add the Rice
Add the drained rice once the water reaches a gentle boil.

  5. Cook Covered
Reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for approximately 12–15 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed.

  6. Rest the Rice
Turn off the heat and leave the rice covered for approximately 5–10 minutes.

  7. Fluff Gently
Use a fork to gently separate the grains before serving.

💡 Rice Cooking Tip

For soft, fluffy and separate grains, avoid stirring the rice repeatedly while cooking. Soaking before cooking can help promote more even hydration.

Water requirements and cooking time can vary slightly depending on the rice batch, cooking vessel, and preferred texture, so adjust accordingly.

For pulao or biryani, you can cook the rice to slightly less than fully tender before completing the final cooking with the masala or gravy.

Kalanamak is a heritage, short-grain variety grown specifically in the Himalayan Terai. Unlike Basmati, it has a distinct dark tip, a nuttier flavour, and a softer texture. It is naturally aged and minimally processed to preserve its unique nutritional profile.
Yes, Kalanamak is known for having a lower Glycemic Index (GI) compared to many standard white rice varieties. This means it digests slower, helping to prevent sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag ensures that the rice is authentically sourced from its native region (Siddharthnagar and surrounding districts in UP). It guarantees you are getting the genuine heritage grain, not a hybrid grown elsewhere.
Rinse the rice thoroughly and soak it for 20-30 minutes before cooking. Use a water-to-rice ratio of about 2:1. Cook on a low simmer until the water is absorbed, then let it rest covered for 5 minutes for the perfect fluffy texture.
Store the rice in an airtight container in a cool, dry, and dark place. Kept away from moisture and direct sunlight, our Kalanamak rice easily maintains its aroma and quality for up to 12 months.
